South Dragons Are Gone - Goorjian Moves On

RIP

As I eluded to a few hours ago, something big was going to shake the NBL world.
Newly crowned NBL champions the South Dragons will not be part of a new look competition in season 2009/10, if it goes ahead.

Wow is all I can say right now as I'm still gob smacked with this news, but Basketball Australia accepts the Dragons decision.

It has not taken super coach Brian Goorjian to move on though.

Goorjian will take his defensive minded game plan to the Chinese CBA next season.

My sources have Goorjian taking the reins of the DongGuan New Century Leopards franchise.

Hey JR, you got any Croc news for a sponsor and season ticket holder? Would appreciate anything you could pass on. I understand that Smythe is on annual leave (which is disappointing at best - especially with all the bad news that is around). Thanks JR.

Hey JR,
Same boat as you Macca. WHERE'S THE CEO? Helllooooo? Anyone? Anything? This would be funny if it wasn't so sad. RIP the NBL and Crocodiles. At least Smythe will have some great happy snaps from his holidays.

Unfortunately, the NBL is dead. Expect an announcement next week. Foxtel have walked away - there's no tv deal

Why are you saying RIP if they are just skipping one year rather than folding?

This is horrible. I can't believe that a league in a little over 10 years can go from packed houses nationwide, including regularly drawing 10K + fans in Melbourne to absolute ruin.

It cannot get any worse for the league than it is right now. They need to announce a one year recess immediately to get everything sorted out so they don't further damage the reputation of basketball as a premier sport in Australia. The NBL name is probably too damaged to use any longer. They need to repackage and relaunch in 2011.
