More Too It Than Meets The Eye

Julius Hodge would be a great addition to the grape stomping circuit. There's plenty of room for him.

I cannot let the Julius Hodge stomp saga die completely without me having a say on the matter.

The city of Adelaide was still a buzz a week after Hodge and his teammates left town with the win and a new found dance step dubbed the Mahercarena.

In my sixteen years being involved as a player in the NBL, I have never seen one single incident hold court like this one has in the media.

Here is my take on the situation.

At a quick glance it seems that Hodge has over reacted during an emotional time, which was sealed with a victory. Walk off the court with your head held high and fans may have to rethink their opinion of Hodge as a person.

Instead Hodge seeked out the signature of Adelaide 36er legend Brett Maher and proceeded to stomp until his teammates dragged him from the arena.

This is where I become somewhat confused with the whole situation.

If Hodge had some built up emotion towards the club, why not seek out the 36ers logo that is in the same vicinity of the court and give me your best grape stomping technique?

In my opinion on both occasions when stomping he seeks out Maher's "John Hancock" on the hardwood.

I have no personal opinion of Hodge as a person or teammate but it seems there is some "beef" between Maher and Hodge. (Hodge would not appear on his former captain's weekly Internet show if he was present. Phil Smyth was brought in to help Kevin Brooks interview the New York native while Maher made a coffee.)

To me there is more to this story than meets the eye. My life experiences tell me the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I'm sure like any incidents such as this the whole truth will never be known, but my hats off to Hodge for playing the villain to the best of his abilities.

- Pero Cameron is rumoured to be the player/coach in New Zealand NBL for the Wellington Saints.

I come across this article that mentions that Cameron is playing "coy" about the coaching situation and he "can't hide".

- Although a lot of attention has centred around Julius Hodge, the Adelaide 36ers should never have given Hodge the opportunity to parade around after the final buzzer.

The 36ers is not the only team guilty of this behaviour of the past week. My own New Zealand Breakers, we found a way to cough up a seemingly unbeatable situation to the Wollongong Hawks.

Along similar lines the Cairns Taipans surrendered a lead during the last sixty seconds of play against the Gold Coast Blaze on the road.

The ladder will show this season is tighter than myself. These are the type of games that can come back to haunt a team come the end of the season when you are scrambling for wins to make the playoffs.

Make a note in your diary to see if any of these results cost a team a playoff spot.

- The Cairns Taipans are once again "under the pump" with their financial situation.

- League leading Wollongong Hawks will have to stay focused during the holiday season. they have a tough schedule during this period, so there will not be too much Christmas cheer for Cameron Tragardh and his teammates.

- According to Townsville Crocodiles Head Coach Trevor Gleeson, it was a poor third quarter that cost the Crocs a road victory in Perth.

- After an impressive double double (22pts, 12 rebs) against the Townsville Crocodiles, Perth Wildcat centre Luke Schenscher feels like he is running into some form.

I have to thank host Cameron Tragardh for the "shout out". And yes what else is there besides the Gonzaga Bulldogs, Canberra Raiders and Texas Holdem Poker?

Since I'm so experienced in this field, my advice for Trigger this week is, don't be like Andrew Gaze and sit on the fence. If you are going to have a crack at somebody, let's say Jesse Wagstaff, don't try and put the vehicle in reverse once the damage has been done.

Trigger, I'm sure you will hear from the Perth fans next time you head west.

I have to admit it is a better episode than the last.

Doin The Julius Stomp

Yeah, I did it. What you gonna do about it?

Here is the footage of emotional Melbourne Tiger Julius Hodge doing his version of, "if you're happy and you know it stomp your feet". (Usual villain Mark Worthington apologised to the Adelaide community for the behaviour displayed by temmate Hodge.)

The only trouble was it was on the signature of club legend Brett Maher.

It has been reported that Hodge believes it would have been his name on the court, had he of stuck around Adelaide. Big call but I like the confidence Julius.

Too bad the Tigers have visited the South Australian franchise twice this year already. That could have turned into a pay-per-view event.

Kendall Out For Season

Love him or hate him, you have to feel for Luke Kendall who has suffered a season ending injury.

This NBL season just seem to go from bad to worse for the Melbourne Tigers.

First, former league MVP Chris Anstey will miss a large chunk of the season due to a hip injury, point guard Nathan Crosswell misses a month due to "turf toe" and now starting guard Luke Kendall is done for the year after suffering a knee injury at practice.


Throw in Julius Hodge having to make a mad dash back to the USA and the Tigers could not be any more unsettled right now.

While all this is going on, the city of Adelaide has been preparing for the return of Hodge, the once loved player for the city of churches.

Hodge Responds

Julius Hodge thinks he is the male version of Anna Kournikova. Somehow I cannot see him pulling of a Speedo like this.

Melbourne Tiger import Julius Hodge has responded to the recent blog posted by former Adelaide teammate Brad Davidson.

Hodge down played the blog entry but responded on Gaze.com.au with a comment regarding Davidson's comparison of Julius with tennis glam girl Anna Kournikova.

He is what he had to say via Gaze.com.au.

"She's very beautiful and I would like to give a thanks to Brad cause he did know that by far I am the most handsome teammate he's ever had. So, cheers mate."

Somewhere in Adelaide Rupert Sapwell is shaking his head in disbelief at this quote.

Is Hodge A Good Fit?

Julius Hodge should probably be in the gym working on his jump shot instead of the beach if you ask former teamate Brad Davidson.

I've been surfing the net this morning just checking out all things basketball and this Brad Davidson blog entry is by far the most interesting read I found.

The Commonwealth Games gold medallist talks about his relationship with new Melbourne Tiger Julius Hodge during their time together as teammates at Adelaide.

I will let you decide for yourself and come to your own conclusions, but it would be interesting to here from a Melbourne Tiger (hey Wortho, in between beers, give us a blog on Hodge) to see if Hodge has painted a different picture in Melbourne, than the impression he has left in Adelaide.

Here is Davidson's words, let me know what you think.

"Since Julius Hodge last left our shores in the middle of the 2008/09 season, I have said to a few people that he was the worst teammate I’d ever had on my team throughout my basketball career.

Is Julius a bad person? No he’s not. Did Julius give you everything he had on game night? Absolutely yes during his first season here in Adelaide, but the second season hmmmm - most of the time.

Julius mark 2 came in so much fanfare that you can see why he was so self centreed and deluded and I think a big factor for his attitude was he didn’t want to be here after being so close to fulfilling his NBA dream. The tech fouls, not getting back on defence and general attitude when things were going bad really hurt him in the face of the team. When a guy that really did like you say that you were a cancer for the team you gotta start to think it’s you mate, not the rest of the world that has the problem! I think the Adelaide 36ers were at fault to start the disintegration of the relationship but Julius was at fault there after but not once has he said he wished he’d done something differently so he could’ve stayed in this place that he claims to love so much. I’m pretty sure he was getting some bad advice from his American agent too (and not the first person that has had that, Schensch?).

I think it’s sad that Julius is back. He is easily the most talented player I’ve played with, but is he the best player I’ve played with? No but he should be. Make no mistake about it Julius is going to come back to Australia and put up big numbers and be in the top 3 players in the league. Do you know how good you have to be to score 25 a game and put up the numbers he does with that ridiculously bad shooting style and flat shot? It was like Anna Kournikova - her serve was the worst in women’s tennis but she was still in the top 10 in the world because the rest of her game was so good. I could say that Julius is like Kournikova and isn’t a winner but I never got a championship, so you know what they say about people in glass houses……

Everyone knew Julius and I didn’t quite see eye to eye as we are polar opposites, yet also surprisingly similar. We are both smart arses who liked getting a rise out of people. I would shoot and hit a few threes in a row and say to Julius “if you had this shot you’d be earning five million a year right now” and he would call me ‘mini me’ and enjoyed dropping some short jokes any chance he got. But that’s where the similarities end. Julius worked harder in the gym during his second season here and did spend time shooting, but this was after sitting out the parts of practice he didn’t want to participate in. I personally didn’t want to shoot with Julius after training because I’d already had my workout and didn’t need more fitness work rebounding all his misses. Besides, I would get up more game type shots in 30 mins as he would get up standing still shooting in an hour.

I’ll be interested to see whether Julius has learnt anything since he left and whether he returns with a better attitude. It will be interesting to see if he helps the Tigers get better or whether he still thinks the world revolves around his every move. Either way it’ll be good to watch!!"

"Homicide" Williams Is A Croc & Aussies In Vegas

Dunk you very much. Twitter confirms "Homicide" will be back in Townsville.

I'm sure if you read my latest post you may have still had a little uncertainty as to Corey "Homicide" Williams was returning to the Townsville Crocodiles this season.

Well, I'm here to tell you that "Homicide" must be a regular reader of this blog because he did drop the news of him signing with the Crocodiles via Twitter yesterday.

These two messages in succession on Corey's Twitter page are enough for me to believe that he is a Croc for next season.

Adelaide 36ers Head Coach Scott Ninnis talking up the prospect of former Maryland Terrapin point guard John "don't call me Adam" Gilchrist.

I wonder if Ninnis was wearing the popular 1990's tube sock when he made the decision?

- While on the 36ers, former import Julius Hodge is trying his luck in the NBA again. Over the summer he will join the Chicago Bulls at various Summer Leagues.

During this recent radio (am850 the Buzz Sports Radio) interview, Hodge talks about how he is ready to rejoin the NBA.

He mentions how his "jumper" is ready.

My two cents worth on Julius' jump shot. It will be ready when my shotblocking abilities are NBA ready.

NBL fans take note, Julius believes that the French league is a little better than what Australia (NBL) has to offer.

- Brad Newley entered Day 2 of the Vegas Summer League looking to put forward a better performance from Day 1. His Houston Rockets had a win over Nathan Jawai's Dallas Mavericks.

Newley was solid in his performance with 9pts (3-6) and pulling down four boards.

Jawai did not play in this game.

- Fellow South Australian Joe Ingles was in action as well. Ingles had a quiet night shooting the ball (1-7 for 3pts) but he chipped in with 8 boards.

- North Queensland product Aron Baynes is playing for the NBA champions, LA Lakers in Vegas.

He was solid without being eye catching yesterday with 4pts and 4rebs of the bench.

- And just in case you missed it, Pat Mills will miss the entire Summer League circuit because of a broken foot.

New Year's Resolutions & Hodge Takes One To Nutz

The Crocs brought in the New Year with a bang,..a solid win over the league leading South Dragons. While my teammates were out on the town ringing in the New Year, I was at home taking notes on some of their New Year resolutions.

Russell Hinder is known for his hustle play and those “one percenters” that help get his team over the line for a victory. And sharing team colours with him for the second time has reacquainted me with the fact that the guy spends A LOT of time on the floor.

Rusty’s resolution: To take the shoe size down by one size in an attempt to avoid tripping over those pesky painted lines on the court.

The “Love Doctor” Rosell Ellis has created a buzz around town on air when he doles out relationship advice every Thursday morning. From what I understand, many of his ‘patients’ are impressed and willing to take on board Rosell’s advice.

Ro’s resolution: To organise “The Love Doctor”World Tour. Stay tuned to find out when the Love Doctor’s tour bus will be rolling into a city near you.

My longtime teammate Kelvin Robertson has provided the team with many a laugh over the past few months (who am I kidding,…years), most recently it has been as a result of his joke telling. And let me tell you, it isn’t the punch line that is getting a laugh.

Kel’s resolution: To tell a joke that I haven’t already heard from my seven year old son.

Anthony Susnjara has been a great addition to this year’s team. His sense of humour and candor can never been misinterpreted. And if there is a random, short lived injury to be had, you can bet it will find a home with him. In his short time with the Crocs, he has already managed to suffer from random leg spasms and neck stiffness that lasted for days. He has been so light-headed that he has nearly fainted in practice and has vomited after an ill placed knee from a member of the opposition.

Sus’s resolution: That his next injury suffered be one that he may actually be able to receive some type of treatment for.

You may wonder just how Corey “Homicide” Williams could possibly be left off such a list as this? Two words: Too easy.

And last but not least, I am betting that all Croc fans would love to see their team can go undefeated for the rest of the season.

Well, I will see you Sunday afternoon when we face the Blaze and we will see if we can carry out this particular New Year’s resolution together.

- CJ Bruton will be out for three weeks with a dodgy wheel, while his replacement has been plucked from behind a office desk. Only in New Zealand!

Back to tonight's game. The Breakers were unable to capitalise on the favourable result of the South Dragons losing earlier on in the week. The Breakers had a chance to gain the outright lead at the top of the table with a win tonight.

Not to be. Now the Melbourne Tigers will begin to believe they are a chance of a top two finish.

- "I don't want to stir up the chemistry. He's come here to win a championship and fit in with the team and the way we use him will only be to the team's benefit. If we use him off the bench, we use him off the bench."

These are the words of Dragons coach Brian Goorjian talking to the Herald Sun about new import Donta Smith coming off the bench.

I see Smith playing a huge role the rest of the way for the Dragons. He oozes talent that could see him have a huge impact in this league.

But at who's expense will this come at?

- If you believe the words of Adelaide journo Boti Nagy, he will have you thinking the there will be a league next year (starting in October), and the name of it?

The NBL.

- Gold Coast Blaze import Luke Whitehead is at it again. He has put his rappin skills to work for a club song. I have yet to see or hear it, but as I'm heading to the Coast for a game on Sunday, I will endeavour to track it down.

Also, Whitehead has released a DVD titled Frisco 2 The Ville. Sorry Townsville, this is not us.

Luke grew up in San Francisco and attended college in Louisville, but the DVD centres around musical talents from these hoods.

Once again I'm trying to get my hands on a copy so I can review his work.

Just an idea Luke. If you want to create a buzz and push some major units, flick JR a copy or two of your DVD on Sunday. (Ask your teammate Scott MacGregor, I do not pay for anything so you are a better chance of a favourable review if you give me a copy instead of me having to go searching for a bootleg edition.)

Chris Anstey Breakdown and News

Goorj, the three ball is me BABY!

The Olympics is only five days away so I better pick up the pace with my player breakdowns.

Lets take a look at the NBL's MVP Chris Anstey.

strengths: The knock on Anstey is his lack of being a consistent low post target and floating out to three point territory. I look at this as being a strength for the Boomers during international competition.

With his ability to shoot the three ball this allows Andrew Bogut or David Andersen the room they require to operate down low. I would actually look at playing Anstey with either of these guys, especially when we play against the bigger teams.

Him and Nielsen together are not so good as "Nellie" is more of a slashing power forward. You need a constant target down low so "no go" for this combo.

Anstey is a proven performer at the high end of European ball so his strengths have served him well. The Aussies need to roll with these instead of looking at his negatives.

Chris is a good rebounder and passer as well so he can be more than just a guy that will stretch the opposition defense.

Also, remember he is a legit seven foot so he can intimidate on defense when he wants to. (I'll look for Dwight Howard to monster dunk on him at least once though when they clash in the next few days.)

weakness: I believe he tends to get carried away with passing the ball at times and this leads to some very loose turnovers. Always looking for the "home run" backdoor play, it can quite often let to a fast break for the opposition.

He needs to cut down on his careless TO's. Just the other night against Argentina he had two on penetration. This stat more than any other at the international level can be a game killer.

The team that manufactures easy points usually wins.

overall: Anstey's strengths far out weigh his weaknesses. The trouble is, his mistakes can be costly to the team.

I believe he will figure heavily if the Boomers make a medal run.

Boomers Cough Up 19 Point Lead

Scola's play allowed his team to hang around and come back from 19 down to win.

Very similar to the game against Greece at the 2006 World Championships, the Australian Boomers gave up a 19 point third quarter lead, losing by four to Argentina.

The 95-91 final score doesn't show how much the Aussies got outplayed in the second half. Coach Brian Goorjian would not have been happy after the game, especially conceding 60 points in the second half.

The first quarter was played at a blistering pace and offense was not a problem for either team. When the quarter ended the Aussies had their nose in front, 25-21. Few shots were missed in this 10 minutes but there was no way this scorching pace could continue.

In the second quarter the Boomers continued their hot shooting while their defense stifled the South Americans and limited them to 11 points in the quarter. The half time score saw the Boomers head to the lockerroom with a 47-36 lead.

After half time it seemed like a formality the Boomers would coast to their second Diamond Ball Championship. Their offense continued to click and the Argentina team looked like they wanted to get to Beijing, quickly.

But then Luis Scola and Manu Ginobili decided they might as well win this game, since they were there.

Scola (32 pts, 28 in the 2nd half)) was unstoppable on his 13/18 shooting. Whether it was offensive rebounding or finding the gaps for lay ups around the basket, Scola dragged his team back into the contest.

Manu (24pts) was just as tough. He came up with many timely threes or knifed his way to the hoop with the shot clock winding down.

On the other hand, the Aussies turned over the ball too much and started looking around to see who was going to get it done.

If I was to pin point a section of play that cost the Aussies the game it was with about four to five minutes remaining in the game.

My boy Brad Newley missed a couple of free throws that would have really steadied the ship had he have made them. Going the other way the Argentine team scored and got fouled. They missed the free throw and Scola put the offensive rebound back in.

Although the Boomers held a slim lead (4-5 pts) this passage of play just saw the game's momentum change and favour Argentina now.

The game went down to the wire but the Boomers strategy down the stretch has to be questioned.

The clock became the Boomers enemy, but they seemed to be in no hurry to foul and send the opposition to the free throw line. It seemed like they were happy for the game to end.

I looked at this as a great opportunity for the team to work on a late game situation, especially with the Olympics starting next week.

As a fan we can say it was great to see how well the team competed against one of the better teams in the world, but how will this leave the team mentally?

The Boomers have one game left before the Olympics begin. This game is against Team USA and if they continue to play the way they did against Lithuania tonight, the Aussies will head to the Olympic Village with two loses from their last two starts.

Not ideal if you are trying to go into the Olympic tournament with some momentum.

CJ's The Hero But Bogut Plays Big

Andrew Bogut was head and shoulders above anyone else today.

Tonight CJ Bruton hit a three point shot with 0.2 seconds remaining to give the Australian Boomers a 81-78 win over African champions Angola.

Bruton was the hero but NBA star Andrew Bogut was the difference maker in this game. Bogut finished with a game high 32 points and 11 rebounds.

Although it was good to see Bogut heavily involved tonight, the Aussies cannot expect this to become the norm. we need more contributors if we are to advance in Beijing.

This was a close game from start to finish. The Boomers went into half time with a seven point lead thanks to a controversial three, but the Africans had it all squared away by three quarter time.

All tied up with 12 seconds to go, Bruton used a high on ball screen from Bogut with about 6 seconds remaining. Cool as the other side of your pillow Bruton launched the three and "bingo". The Boomers sneak out the victory.

The Angolans were a good hit out for the Boomers because of their quickness and ability to shoot the ball. Although one of the smaller teams going to the Olympics, they possess a few players that are multi talented.

A small centre Eduardo Mingas, power forward Joaquim Gomes and small forward Olimpia Cipriano will keep all teams honest in Beijing let alone the Aussies.

These three guys combined for 60 of the 78 points their team scored.

Another solid win by the Boomers who will now play Argentina for the championship of the Diamond Ball. This game is on the 1st of August (Friday) at 9.30pm EST. Check out www.justin.tv/antileech to catch the action live on the net.

Interesting note, that in tonight's game and against China, Goorjian has gone with Bruton, Bogut, Matt Nielsen, Brad Newley and Mark Worthington down the stretch.

Also, as the Boomers work closer to the opening game of the Olympic Games, Goorijan will look to tighten his rotations. I will keep an eye on this to see who will be the guys that fill the bench role of Tony Ronaldson, Martin Cattalini, Paul Rogers and myself at the last Olympics.

A positive write up for the former Cairns Taipan, Nathan Jawai. Considering it was his rookie year last year, it is interesting that he has won two NBL titles though.
