We're Coming After You TBJ

Sometimes you have to gloat just a little, even if it only lasts for a day.

This website's podcast has slowly but surely been building in its popularity and DJ Rod loves hyping up the stats, especially in comparison to The Basketball Jones (TBJ). Yes guys, you are our measuring stick for some reason.

If you can read the above iTune stats, "The OT" has just snuck ahead of TBJ at the last poll. (Sportal covers many sports so they fudge the stats a little so we ignore them.)

I'm sure JE Skeets and his cast will have some great response to this graph, but as I said, DJ Rod and I will live it up while we can.

Enough of the this banter, time to slip a DVD on for the kids and crack open a bag of chips and a 3 litre Tampico (Aussies don't know what they are missing out on with this fine drop) juice.

The evening session of the NCAA Touney is about to begin.

It's My Birthday & More Homicide

Yes, today is the first birthday for this hoops blogspot. It certainly doesn't seem that long ago I was puzzled about what I should call such a creation. JR, On Fire was born and the blogging world has never been the same.

This spot got off to a very slow and scary start as I'm not the most tech savvy guy. But with help from a lot of people along the way I can now change the ink colour all by myself, post a video and use spell check sometimes.

Although it is still very much a work in progress I feel it is now at a level where a monster sponsor (Yahoo, ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Slam or anyone for that matter) is going to knock on my door any minute now. (Watch out Henry Abbott I might one day get to "Worldwide Wes".)

Hopefully in the near future there will be other additions here so my loyal supporters can see I'm dedicated to bringing them all things basketball, (almost)everyday of the year.

My highlights to date are:

- getting a mention on JE Skeets, Ball Don't Lie. Thanks Yahoo Sports.

- entering in on the Steve Nash free throw challenge. I need to hear back from Steve still.

- Dime Mag referring to me as "some Australian dude".

- last but certainly not least, my wife not finding a typo when she flicks through here once a week.

I can only hope my next twelve months are as much fun as I endeavour to get this cyber world/blogging thing down.

Now On To The News:

- There are a lot of people out there that accuse me of self promotion but Corey "Homicide" Williams may have me beat. My backcourt running mate called me today to say I needed to "check out" Slam Online.

I come to find out that Slam had just put a fresh article online about C-Murder. Check out the video also so someone can please tell me why "Homicide" is wearing a jockstrap on his head in one of the highlights?

- WorldHoopsBlog turns one month old today. Maybe we can blow out the candle together? I cannot believe Kobe beat me out for the starting two guard spot. More practice is required I guess.

- As I mentioned here yesterday, Jeff Dowdell has been cut by the Perth Wildcats. While the Wildcats had the axe out, they chopped Tom Garlepp as well.
- 36ers Davidson in danger of missing season opener.

- Sydney King's former owner Tim Johnston has more dodgy dealings. This time with the military.

- Crocs and Tigers to do battle in Mackay.

- Wollongong Hawks and Gold Coast Blaze will battle on the Tropic of Capricorn. For those who are geographically challenged, Rockahampton is found there.

- South Dragons finally sign import Ebi Ere. Oops, sorry, it is Tremmell Darden.

- Blaze have a four point win over the Hawks. Blaze big man Casey frank goes for 36. boxscore

- Sydney Spirit get win over touring Japanese team. Former Washington St point guard Derrick Low led all scorers with 20 to go with 7 assists.

- boxscore from Tigers/Crocs clash last night. I shoot better than I write!

- Greg Oden, ROY?

- Dwight Howard is aiming for two gold medals.

- Pat Riley to go into the Hall of Fame on Friday.

- D-Wade, Kobe and 'Melo to be on Oprah.

- What's next for NBA rookies Mario Chambers and Darrell Arthur?

- So you think he is a loser? Seattle native and current New York Knick guard Jamal Crawford joins us athletes in the blog squad world.

A JR exclusive - "Homicide" Williams comments on Bounce Mag's Top Ten New York Streetballers for this summer.

Ere A Tiger and A Knight-Mare Out West

Seamus says, "Put your hands up in the air." Ebi Ere (picuted) will be a Melbourne Tiger.

The hot topic burning up forums and blogspots is the news that NBL dual championship winning import Ebi Ere is signing with the current champions, the Melbourne Tigers. (It may be almost official, NOW!)

There are so many angles and storylines that you could go with this but I'm not sure whether the truth will ever come out.

Whether you want to believe that Ere learnt the finer points of getting out of a contract from teammate and friend CJ Bruton, you better throw into the mix of theories that both clubs (Tigers and Dragons) involved in this process have two guys that run their teams that would love to get one up on the other.

I'm sure Tigers owner Seamus McPeake dropped everything, almost everything I hope, once he knew their was a chance he could spoil Dragons chairman Mark Cowan's revival party.

Whatever the truth is behind Ere moving across town, please put it to rest and lets get on with the season.

I love that the Tigers are putting together their "Dream Team". Everytime they step on the floor they are going to get the oppositions best shot.

As for the opposition, what a great challenge to go out there and beat this team that is suppose to be great? You are in a no lose situation. I look forward to the times we play them. I love the thought of playing the Tigers and challenging myself against the best. They are the measuring stick and I'm happy to roll with my team against them.

We might surprise ourselves with how good we could be.

I know there are a lot of people shaking their head at how the Tigers can assemble such a team. But if you ask all players if they feel they should be playing more and having a bigger influence on a game, they will answer yes. So why complain about a team being "stacked".

Go out there, play and show why you deserve more playing time and opportunity.

The league needs a team such as this. Remember there is no Sydney Kings to hate anymore so the Tigers should bring the best out of everyone, including the NBL.

Whether the Tigers have constructed their team the right or wrong way, that is for the NBL office to decide. But I have no problem taking them on.

Tigers/Crocs championship series, I can dig that.

Out west in Perth there may be a new story brewing. Supposedly new signing Ben Knight may not be signing unless the Wildcats release someone from their roster.

My sources say the NBL office has told the Wildcats if Knight signs they need to release a player so their team is under the points total each team has to abide by.

I'm no good with the finer workings of the points system the league has in place, but it will be interesting to see who the unlucky player is that gets tapped on the shoulder to make room for Knight.

Other News

- Singapore Slingers are set to lose another player. Jason Castro will settle with the Slingers in the near future then go home and play.

- Wollongong looking to turn up their "D".

- Adelaide 36ers will play the South Dragons this weekend in a preseason game, but this game has a thick plot.

- So called ESPN experts already predict their NBA award winners.

- Yahoo Sports blogger JE Skeets mentions Wollongong Hawks Glen Saville and his pork chops.

- The Hoops Doctor has a great list of Daily Dimes. Anything from dunking on Shaun Bradley to Travis Outlaw living in the south.

NAsh Challenge Building Momentum & Beijing Hoops

All systems go for Men's Basketball.

While the world was talking about and celebrating the start of the Beijing Olympics, I had my own party as I celebrated my rookie appearance on Yahoo.com's - Ball Don't Lie.

I think the correct way of saying this is a huge hat tip to JE Skeets and his The 10-Man Rotation article.

Makes me start thinking of creating my own movement, Rod Benson style.

While I'm tipping my hat, I must include A Stern Warning. He is teaching me and looking out for me in this dangerous world of blogging. He pumps up my tyres via Ball Hype as well. Thanks.

I don't wish to keep harping on it but the free throw challenge started by Steve Nash is gaining momentum.

US hoop mag, Dime, has jumped on board as well.

World Hoops Blog is all over the contest as well. Cheers knackers.

Unbelievable what knocking down free throws can do!

Lets move on, shall we.

Today saw the women hit the hardwood (all scores here) at the Olympic Games and tomorrow will bring the first day of the men.

I take a look at all six games that will take place tomorrow.
Russia vs Iran (9am China)

Russia has slid under the radar leading into these Games. They won the European Championship last year but everyone seems to have forgotten this when they discuss medal possibilities.

This is a great warm up game for Russia.

Flag bearing Russian Andrei Kirilenko and Co will have too much for Iran's 7'2 Hamed Ehadadi and his teammates.

If there is heavy smog the Russians may break a sweat.

Germany vs Angola (11.15am China)

Germany's NBA pair of Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas) and Chris Kaman (Clippers) should control the boards which will limit Angola's scoring opportunities.

If the Germans start out sloppy, look for Angola's trio of Olimpio Cipriano, Joaquim Gomez and Eduardo Mingas to cause some problems.

I'm predicting Angola to upset someone at these Games. If Germany takes them lightly, they could be the first victim.

In the end the Germans will be too big, too strong for the African Champs.

Spain vs Greece (2.30pm China)

Game of the round. Both teams would be thinking they will be around the mark when the medals are being decided. Neither team will want to start their Olympic campaign with a loss.

Spain is star studded with NBAers Pau Gasol, Jose Calderon and NBA castoffs Juan-Carlos "Nissan" Navarro and Jorge Garbajosa. Also they have talented youth on the roster (Marc Gasol, Ricky Rubio and Rudy Fernandez) to give them depth.

Greece on the otherhand rely on great team play to get them the "W".

Sure Antonis Fotsis and Vassilis Spanoulis can light it up in a heart beat but it is the unselfish play of Dimitris Diamantidis and Theo Papaloukas that sets the tone for this team.

Greek centre Ionnis Bouroussis needs to stay out of foul trouble against the Gasols. Bouroussis is a player that can have an effect on the game at both the offensive and defensive ends, but foul trouble will hinder his ability to have an impact on the game.

In the end I feel the Spaniards have too much firepower for the Greek's sticky team defense.
Lithuania vs Argentina (4.45pm China)

If the previous game is not the game of the day, then this one is.

Lithuania is not as talented as they have been over the previous three Olympics, but while Saunas Jasikevkius is controlling the point guard position, the Lithos will be in any game.

Argentina on the other hand have all their studs in uniform. Manu Ginobili, Fabricio Oberto, Luis Scola, Andreas Nocioni and Carlos Delfino are one hand but I feel the pressure to perform is on Pablo Prigioni.

The point guard spot has usually been controlled by Pepe Sanchez but he is no longer with the team. Sanchez was a great PG at the international level. He had the ability to control a game without scoring a point.

Now it is Prigioni's turn. They are the defending gold medallists so he needs to perform well if the South Americans are to repeat Athens effort.

Argentina to win this game because of their superior depth everywhere.

Australia vs Croatia (8.00pm China)

This could be the game that sees the winner advance through to the quarter final round.

The Boomers (Aussies) have been building nicely during their warm up games and look ready for a strong Olympic campaign.

Over the past month these two teams have met three times. Croatia won two games while Australia managed a solo win.

Should we read into these results? I don't think so. The health of Andrew Bogut's ankle should be more of an issue.

If Bogut is healthy we have a strong front line to compete with anyone, let alone Croatia.

I'll say it again though, CJ Bruton needs to control the situation for the Boomers to be at their best.

Croatia is another team that is not as strong as they once were but they still have enough to scare most.

NBAer Roko Ukic (Raptors) and former Net Zoran Planinic are talented enough to cause Aussie coach Brian Goorjian some headaches.

If the Boomers are to make some noise in Beijing they need to win this game.

Aussies to win for me.
USA vs China (10.15pm)
This game is going to be filled with emotion. For the host nation China, they have sat around all day waiting for their game to arrive.
Yao and Co have an expectation to live up to in their homeland. There is some pressure there for them to succeed. Don't forget, Dell Harris got this team to the quarter final in Athens. They are at home now.
The USA or should I say "redeem team" have made it know they are in Beijing to get back what they feel they deserve. The gold medal. They want to get the first game out of the way.
Yao will pose some problems for the USA as the red, blue and white lack size inside.
The trouble for the Chinese is point guard Liu Wei will struggle against the USA's pressure defense which will limit Yao's impact on this game.
I'll be keeping an eye on newly acquired New Jersey Net Yi Jianlian to see if him and the coach are getting along a little better than during their warm up games.
USA to win this very easily. Will China be able to bounce back though?
